About

Heartbeat for Everest has been established by Steve Watts to help raise much needed funds for the British Heart Foundation and The Himalayan Trust UK.

Two charities close to Steve’s heart.

On 18th April 2014, Steve & his brother Peter were fulfilling a lifelong ambition to trek to Mt. Everest basecamp, little did they know a catastrophic event was about to unfold – the worst avalanche in Mount Everest’s history, tragically killing 16 Sherpas – remarkable men who help those around them achieve their dreams.

For this reason, Steve who has a ‘pacemaker’ has decided to take part in an epic challenge that will raise awareness and money for both worthy charities.

The Challenge

In order to raise much needed funds for both the British Heart Foundation and the Himalayan Trust UK Steve has set himself the challenge to compete in the The Hillary Tenzing Everest Marathon on the 29th May 2016

The World’s Highest Marathon –
The World’s Toughest Race

The marathon starts at Mt. Everest Base Camp (17,598ft) just beneath the Khumbu Icefall region finishing 26.2 miles later in Namche Bazaar (11,306ft).  Running through awe-inspiring surroundings and in the midsts of imposing mountains in the heart of the Himalaya, this is the highest marathon in the world.

Upon completing this epic challenge Steve will become the first person to do so with a Pacemaker!

The Charities

Heartbeat for Everest has been established to raise much needed funds for the Himalayan Trust UK and the British Heart Foundation – But why these charities?

British Heart Foundation

In 2004 I lost my older brother Bobby to a fatal heart attack which he suffered whilst driving home on the M60 near Manchester, Bobby was just 54 years old.

I myself have a heart condition known as Syncope and pre Syncope which has resulted in me having a Pacemaker fitted.

It is for this reason that the British Heart foundation Every Heart Matters campaign has been chosen to receive half of the amount raised to help fund research into finding the Gene, which is carried by 50% of newborn babies, this Gene could one day trigger that fatal Heart attack. 161,000 lives are lost to cardiovascular disease every year.

Himalayan Trust UK

The Himalayan Trust UK was set up to support Sir Edmund Hillary’s work for the Sherpas in Nepal, raising funds to ensure that every child has access to an education.  The Himalayan Trust UK aims to ensure this happens in the remote mountainous districts of Nepal – in particular the regions surrounding Everest and Kanchenjunga.

Today, as in the past decades, the mountain people of Nepal continue to support climbers and trekkers in the Himalayas, and the need and desire to give something back, through the Himalayan Trust UK, is still very much alive and kicking.

Heartbeat for Everest will help with the further education of those who lost their fathers in the April 2014 tragedy.
